Background

Born into a family of artists, Renato Orciuoli developed his musical path from an early age, graduating with highest honours in violin and viola from the Conservatory “D. Cimarosa” of Avellino .

He continued his advanced training with leading international figures, including studies at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena under Giuliano Carmignola, and at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, where he obtained the Diploma of Advanced Musical Studies under the guidance of Sonig Tchakerian .

A defining influence in his artistic and academic development has been the mentorship of Massimo Quarta, under whose guidance he completed Master of Arts degrees in Music Performance and Music Pedagogy at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano .

Artistic Career

As a performer, he has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician in Italy and abroad, collaborating with leading orchestras such as the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Teatro alla Scala, Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana and Zürcher Symphoniker.

He has also worked with internationally renowned artists including Sting, Stefano Bollani and Richard Clayderman.

Teaching & Research

Alongside his performing career, Renato Orciuoli has been active as an educator for over 20 years, teaching violin and chamber music and contributing to advanced training programs.

His academic research reflects a strong connection between artistic practice and instrument quality. In his postgraduate thesis, he explored the relationship between instrument and musician:

“Instruments and Instrumentalists: how the quality of the instrument influences the artistic growth of string players.”

This work represents a conceptual bridge between musicianship and instrument expertise, a perspective that continues to define his professional activity.

Fine Instrument Expertise

Parallel to his artistic career, he has developed over 12 years of experience in the field of fine instruments, working in sourcing, evaluation and brokerage.

His formation in violin expertise and dealing has been shaped by the guidance of leading figures such as Giovanni Accornero and Eric Blot, alongside collaborations with internationally recognized firms and experts including:

  • J&A Beare (London)
  • Florian Leonhard (London)
  • Eric Blot Srl (Cremona)
  • Carlson & Neumann (Cremona)
  • Bruno Price (New York)

Artistic Heritage

His background is further enriched by a strong connection to the art world: he is the grandson of Italian 20th-century painter Alfonso Grassi, a pupil of Giorgio de Chirico.

This heritage contributes to a broader cultural perspective in the evaluation of instruments as art objects and collectible assets.

A Unique Perspective

What distinguishes Renato Orciuoli’s approach is the ability to evaluate instruments from multiple perspectives: as a musician (sound, response, projection)
